Top 15 Recipes for Shrove and Pancake Tuesday
It will be Shrove Sunday and Tuesday very soon, so here are some suggestions on what to cook:
Finnish Pea Soup
First I want to list the Finnish pea soup of course, a traditional food for Shrovetide and also a regular Thursday food in lunch canteens (it's supposed to be a filling dish before before Lent/Friday fast).
Moroccan Chickpea and Lentil Soup
If you don't care so much for the traditional pea soup, how about a completely different version of a 'pea soup', this time with chickpeas in this deliciously spiced Moroccan soup.
Pasta e ceci - Chickpea Pasta Stew
How about chickpeas in this delicious Italian pasta stew version?
Crème Saint-Germain - Pureed Pea Soup
If you are planning a bit fancier menu, this French classic is a must!
Sweet Coconut Buns
Since it's Shrovetide, we can't pass the Shrove Buns! These are very soft buns made with coconut milk.
"Shrove Buns" - Laskiaispullat
This is a more traditional 'pulla' (Finnish sweetbread) recipe.
Semla Quark - Laskiaisrahka
A quark version of a 'semla' (Swedish word for a Shrove bun).
Almond Croissant
Since Shrovetide is all about 'semlor' (sweet buns filled with almond paste and cream) why not have an almond croissant too ^_^
Strawberry Shortcake
When I saw strawberry shortcakes for the first time, I immediately thought of Shrove buns. Shrove buns are either filled with jam and cream or with almond paste and cream in Finland (as opposed to Sweden, where they always use almond paste). Shortcakes are a lot quicker to make than yeasted sweet buns, so if you are short on time, these strawberry shortcakes are a great alternative! You can fill them with almond paste or use strawberry jam instead of fresh strawberries which are not in season on northern hemisphere at the moment any way.
And then some ideas for your Pancake Tuesday:
